What do freshmen students get up to as they embark on their new college career? Well, they take tours of campus, find the local watering holes, check their schedules, and, of course get to know the people who they will be working and socializing with over the next few years. You might however be surprised to learn that the first years at St. Maryโs College were bonding not over a keg, but over pitchforks and mulch.

As part of their orientation this year, the majority of new students volunteered to spend their Saturday getting to know each other and their community by pitching in โ literally. Over a hundred students worked at locations across the county, and a further 200 were busy cleaning up their own campus.
While some were mulching, picking up trash and cleaning the campus roads, others were helping out off-campus. Several of those volunteers packed onto a county school bus and headed to the Three Notch Theatre, where they spent their day painting, sorting through costumes, and cleaning up the storage room.
It wasnโt all serious labor. The group at Three Notch got into the theatrical spirit by donning costumes and even breaking for a sing-along on the theatreโs piano. โA good time was had by all, and a lot of work and organizing was completed! We’d like to be able to do more of this!โ Wendy Heidrich, director of the Newtowne Players at Three Notch Theatre told The Bay Net.
