UPDATE Tuesday, July 12 Fire Marshal’s report

Avenue, MD – A 20-by-30 wood-framed garage was totally destroyed by fire Monday afternoon, July 11, state investigators reported. According to the Maryland State Fire Marshalโ€™s Office, the blaze on Abell Road was discovered by a neighbor and reported around 1:30 p.m.

โ€œThe fire was determined to have been the result of a malfunctioning generator igniting combustible materials inside the garage,โ€ a fire marshalโ€™s report stated. โ€œThe garage and its contents were completely destroyed. A neighboring house also sustained minor exterior damage due to the fire.โ€

Forty volunteer firefighters were dispatched to the one-alarm blaze and brought the flames under control in 15 minutes.

No injuries were reported. Damage to the structure and contents is estimated at $100,000.

According to the fire marshal, the shed was owned by Ronald Mattingly.


Avenue, MD = On Monday, July 11, shortly after 1 p.m. emergency crews in St. Mary’s County were dispatched to a garage fire on Abell Road in Avenue.

Crews arriving first discovered the structure was fully involved. At this time the blaze remains under investigation.
