EDGEWATER, Md. — A serious two-vehicle crash in Anne Arundel County has led to the arrest of a man on multiple charges, including DUI and life-threatening injury by vehicle.

According to police and court documents, Joseph Henry Illig Jr., 64, was arrested following a head-on collision at the intersection of Mitchell Chance Road and Hamlet Club Drive on Feb. 17, 2025, at approximately 2:50 p.m.

Anne Arundel County Police and emergency responders arrived to find a red Ford F-150 and a white Chevrolet truck stopped in the middle of the roadway. A female passenger in the Ford was discovered trapped and unconscious. Emergency personnel worked to stabilize her before she regained consciousness and reported severe neck and back pain. The driver of the Ford, an elderly man, declined medical treatment but expressed concern over his wife’s condition.

The driver of the Chevrolet truck, later identified as Illig, was found at the scene displaying clear signs of impairment. Officers noted he was unsteady on his feet, had slurred speech, and emitted a strong odor of alcohol. When questioned, he appeared confused, unable to recall where he was or how the crash had occurred. He later admitted to consuming vodka before getting behind the wheel.

Standardized field sobriety tests were conducted, and Illig allegedly failed multiple components, demonstrating significant impairment. He was taken into custody and transported to central booking, where a breathalyzer test revealed a blood alcohol concentration of .18—more than twice the legal limit.

Anne Arundel County Police determined that Illig had been driving in the wrong lane of travel before colliding head-on with the Ford. The impact left the female passenger critically injured, leading to additional charges beyond DUI.

Following his arrest, Illig was held without bond and appeared before Judge Eileen A. Reilly for a bail review hearing on Feb. 18, 2025. Judge Reilly ordered that he remain held without bond pending further court proceedings.

Illig is scheduled to appear for trial on April 11, 2025, at Annapolis District Court. Court records indicate that Illig has previous DUI convictions, which could impact sentencing if convicted.
