NORTH BEACH, Md. — National Cheese Day came and went on June 4, but it’s never a bad time to celebrate cheese.
National Cheese Day is an informal holiday that honors all things cheese and its history. In the age of social media, National Cheese Day has grown in popularity, and now businesses, farms, cheesemakers, and cheese lovers all over the world use June 4 to shout their love for cheese and what cheese means to them or their community.
Cheesemaking dates back to 8000 B.C. and has long been a beloved food and craft for people all over the world. Most countries have their own cheeses and cheesemaking techniques, making cheese a special part of human food history and culture.
We’re lucky to have tons of farm-fresh and artisan cheeses to choose from here in Southern Maryland. Residents can find local cheeses at shops and farmers markets year-round. We decided to visit one of our favorite permanent cheese shops — which also offers lunch.
Owned by Megan and Tyler Vaughan, Vaughan Cheese in North Beach has culinary and hospitality backgrounds that allowed them to cultivate a unique offering right here in Calvert County. Between the food and cheese for sale, Vaughan Cheese was a fantastic way to experience National Cheese Day.

Here’s what you need to know:
Shop for Cheese (and More)
The shop has so many cheeses to choose from, and the incredibly knowledgeable staff is ready to help. You can pick out your favorite cheese, try something new, or talk with Megan and the team to find the perfect wine and cheese pairing to enjoy in the restaurant or to bring home.
There were also wines, jams, honey, and more in the shop to help you cultivate the perfect cheese experience. We even got to see the unwrapping of a new giant cheese wheel.

Lunch Menu
Of course, the menu is built around cheese, and all the dishes are designed to make the cheese the center of the meal. We got the Caesar salad and a kids’ cheese plate along with some handmade lemonade and a cucumber mint refresher off the “zero-proof” menu. The salad included whole pieces of lettuce, fresh bread, and was loaded with a sharp, tasty cheese.
The menu also has fresh-pressed juices, beer, wine, and cider to enjoy with your meal. And, of course, if you have questions, the staff is quick to help.

Indoor And Outdoor Dining
Vaughan Cheese is right off Bay Avenue in North Beach, meaning you can catch some views of the bay if you opt for outdoor dining. The outdoor patio is set up with tents, so you will have some shade. The indoor dining space also ups that artisanal feel as you dine right next to the rows and rows of cheese and used books that have cheese info leaping off the page.

Vaughan Cheese is open Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. They also have an online store.
