Waldorf, MD- The North Point High Schoolโs boys basketball team dominated its Florida visitors, Lely High School from Naples, FL, 72-52. The game took place the first day of The James Chapman Holiday Tournament.
North Point Head Coach Jimmy Ball said after the game that he was honest with his players before the contest. After a poor morning practice, he โbootedโ his players out, telling them โIf you guys are going to come here and waste my time then go home.โ
Ballโs players rebounded from the morning practice and the Eagles handled Lely with very little resistance, snatching rebounds, scoring from inside and outside of the paint, and forcing turnovers on defense. The team was led by seniors Jordan Mckenzie (21 points, 5 rebounds, 4 steals, and a block), Magic Hewlett (18 points, 5 assists, and 3 steals) and Satchel Ball (12 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 steals).
โIโm excited where they can go, weโre not a finished product right now โ on the offensive end we get stuck a little bit but thatโs coming, weโre passing the ball, Jordan McKenzie had a hell of a night, weโve been looking for that forever. Them sharing the ball and passing it, it doesnโt get any more beautiful than that,โ said Ball who was very pleased with how his players responded to his criticism earlier that day.
Coach Ball stated that he looks to Hewlett and Ball as leaders of the team, along with junior Asa Williams. โMagic Hewlett, Asa Williams and Satchel Ball, those are the three guys that have the most experience for us. Two are seniors [Hewlett and Ball] and oneโs a junior [Williams]. You like to groom a junior to take over next year. Asa Williams was a hell of a quarterback for us, heโs just a natural leader, thatโs something that heโs used to.โ
North Point improves to 6-1 overall and stays undefeated at 5-0 in the region. The Eagles won their third straight since losing to Wise, 77-62, in the DMV Tip-Off earlier in December. Their next game, following the holiday tournament, comes against Roosevelt on Jan. 2. The Eagles will face rival Westlake at home Jan. 4.
