OWINGS, Md. — The Northern High School National Navy Defense Cadet Corps (NNDCC) placed third at a “Brain Brawl” competition in Stafford, Va., last week. The Brain Brawl is an event where students in their high school’s junior ROTC program come together with other schools to compete in a series of randomized trivia.

This particular Brain Brawl took place at Brooke Point High School in Virginia, and Northern High’s NNDCC cadets competed against other NNDCC and Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) units.

The home team, Brooke Point High School’s own JROTC, took home the first-place prize at the Nov. 19 event. Northern High’s Ian Loveless, Natalie Regan, Shane Flessas, Allison Jones and Reed Noltemeye secured the third-place trophy in the high-pressure, Jeopardy-style competition.

The NNDCC is similar to a JROTC but is funded by the school itself rather than the Navy. The organization is a citizenship program that utilizes the Navy as its vehicle to instill discipline, a sense of service and community support in enrolled cadets.

Northern High’s NNDCC participates in academic events like this one, as well as other competitive events around the region. The NNDCC also had the opportunity to travel to Bermuda last August and continues to teach cadets the core principles of citizenship and leadership development.

“We participate in several other types of competitions with nearby schools, one of them being orienteering. We also volunteer and take part in community events like Honor Flights, where we honor and support local veterans,” wrote the NNDCC’s public affairs officer in an email to The BayNet.

The NNDCC will also be hosting a military ball on Dec. 19 and is expecting local business owners, elected officials and military officers to attend.
