Prince Frederick, MD – Huntingtown Boys and Northern Girls Track and Field were both able to make history at their respective schools this past spring, bringing home their first Maryland 3A state championships. The Calvert Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) honored both during their regular meeting Tuesday, June 25.

“I don’t know how you do it, running is not an easy sport,” stated Commissioner Mike Hart [R-District 1], expressing how “proud” the board and county are of the teams before reading the proclamation for Huntingtown.

The Huntingtown Hurricanes Boys Track and Field team is led by All-Met Coach of the Year, Valerie Harrington who has been at the helm the entirety of the program’s existence. “What sets this team apart is their true grit, perseverance, good character, and they’re great values,” Harington said of her team before thanking the commissioners for honoring them.

The boys were Southern Maryland Athletic Conference (SMAC) champs in both indoor (over the winter) and outdoor track and field. Their perfect 13-0 record was capped off by their narrow victory over Watkins Mill High School, 58-55.

Honored individually and then as a team, the Northern Girls Track and Field team brought home the first state championship in their sport to the second oldest high school in Calvert County.

Present to accept proclamations for their state wins were high jump winner Allie Droneberger (So.), triple jump winner Jasmine Holland (Sr.), and half of the 3200m relay winners, Claudia Dolan (Sr.) and Kathryn Lawless (So.). The 3200m team that was comprised of Oakley Olson (So.) and Abby Setzfand (So.) in addition to both Dolan and Lawless set the Northern High School record for the event at 9:29.92. The absent Olson helped the team by winning two individual races, the 1600m and 3200m.

The achievement closed the book on a perfect state championship sweep for the school’s running sports, winning in Cross Country (Fall), Indoor Track (winter), and Outdoor Track (spring). Joe Dawson coaches all three teams who swept the conference championships as well.
