CALIFORNIA, Md. — A rare burst of the northern lights washed soft greens, pinks and purples over Maryland late Tuesday, as a strong geomagnetic storm pushed the aurora borealis far south of its usual range.
The display, visible across parts of the state and much of the U.S., lit up shortly after nightfall and continued in waves, according to skywatchers. Staff with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources also photographed the spectacle from several locations.
If you caught the show, share your photos so readers can see how the sky looked from across Maryland. In many cases, smartphone cameras recorded more color than the eye could detect, especially in areas with light pollution.

According to the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center, auroral activity is expected to remain elevated Wednesday night, with a Kp index of 6 indicating a strong chance of visible northern lights across much of the northern United States, including parts of Maryland.
The forecast shows the auroral oval extending unusually far south, increasing the likelihood of sightings in the Mid-Atlantic and along the Appalachian corridor. By Thursday night, the storm is expected to weaken slightly, with a Kp index of 4, reducing visibility but still offering possible displays in northern regions and darker rural areas.
NOAA advises that the best viewing conditions occur under clear skies, away from artificial light, and when facing north toward the horizon.

Tonight may also bring an extra celestial treat: the Northern Taurid meteor shower, caused by debris from Comet 2P/Encke, is active and expected to produce bright, slow-moving fireballs visible alongside the aurora for those under dark skies.
If skies stay clear, Marylanders may have another chance to witness the dazzling glow tonight. For the best view, head to a dark area away from city lights and let your eyes adjust — you might just catch one of nature’s most extraordinary light shows.
