Deputy State Fire Marshal Matthew D. Stevens of the Office of the State Fire Marshal has been named the recipient of the 2008 โ€œDeputy State Fire Marshal of the Yearโ€ award.ย  State Fire Marshal William E. Barnard made the presentation during a ceremony at the Maryland State Firemenโ€™s Association annual convention in Ocean City on June 16.

Matthew, โ€œMattโ€ Stevens was cited for his achievement as a fire investigator and for his commitment to initiative, teamwork, and eagerness in accepting additional responsibility.ย  Some of his duties have included: giving presentations and demonstrations to civic groups across the State, working as a field training officer, serving as a bomb technician, teaching an arson and explosives course at the regional police academy, and serving as a member of important committees.

Stevens was nominated by his supervisor Michael J. Mulligan. โ€œMattโ€ not only excelled in his investigative work but, provided continued guidance and assistance to fellow Deputies who worked in the region.ย  His investigative skills resulted in a 68 percent closure rate for both fire and explosive criminal investigations, far exceeding the national average.

Commenting on his service to the citizens of Maryland, State Fire Marshal Barnard said, โ€œMatt Stevens is an outstanding Deputy State Fire Marshal and his continued professionalism is a credit to our Agency.โ€ A nationally certified explosive technician, โ€œMattโ€ also holds professional certifications as a fire investigator and fire inspector.ย ย  โ€œMattโ€ is assigned to the Lower Eastern Shore Regional Office covering, Dorchester, Somerset, Wicomico, and Worcester counties.ย  He makes his home in Wicomico County.
