On Thursday, January 11, at Solomonโ€™s Pier Restaurant, Governor-Elect Martin Oโ€™Malley spoke on his vision for the state of Maryland in his upcoming term as Governor.ย

He began his speech after a short welcome and introduction by Sheila Sullivan and Senator Roy Dyson.ย  At the pier and in the audience were numerous politicians and county government officials such as St. Maryโ€™s County Commissioner Tom Mattingly, Calvert County Commissioner Wilson Parran, and Former State Senator Frank Raley.ย

After an energetic introduction by Senator Dyson, calling the new administration, โ€œa breath of fresh air,โ€ Oโ€™Malley took the podium and delivered his speech to his Southern Maryland constituents.ย

Previously serving two terms as the mayor of Baltimore, prior to running for Governor, Oโ€™Malley expressed the warm feelings he has for Maryland to the audience.ย  โ€œWe have tremendous opportunities as a state,โ€ he said, โ€œespecially when I look at all of the hard-working Marylanders.โ€ย

โ€œCompromise is not a dirty word,โ€ said Oโ€™Malley.ย  โ€œIt is a common ground.โ€ย

There were multiple issues Oโ€™Malley was pressed with, and he covered many of the topics compellingly, according to members of the audience. Among the top priorities Oโ€™Malley outlined were transportation plans, protecting Marylandโ€™s families and neighborhoods, making home ownership more affordable, strengthening Marylandโ€™s farming communities, providing affordable, quality health care, and of course, โ€œhaving the opportunity to come together,โ€ he said, โ€œas One Maryland.โ€ย

โ€œWe have a tremendous challenge, yes.ย  But Kennedy once said that the greatest privilege is the privilege of responsibility,โ€ said Oโ€™Malley.ย

Although not in office at this point, Oโ€™Malley is making commitments to the public that reassured and delighted many who had come to hear him speak. โ€œWe will not raid open space dollars,โ€ Oโ€™Malley said amid cheers.ย  โ€œWe will not raid the transport trust fund.โ€

Oโ€™Malley predicted a challenging, yet beneficial year. He expressed his excitement at being elected the new Governor of Maryland and being part of the continuing progress of the state. And, according to Oโ€™Malley, โ€œProgress is the issue closest to my heart.โ€
