Although the holidays have passed and gift giving is coming to a halt, there is one gift you can give that is free and can save lives: blood donation.
January is National Blood Donor month and there is an urgent need for blood donors, especially for Type โOโ and Type โBโ in Southern Maryland, according to the American Red Cross, Greater Chesapeake and Potomac Regionโs website.
St. Maryโs Hospital uses about 3,000 units of blood a year.ย The shelf life for blood is about 35 to 42 days.ย Each unit of blood can save three or four lives, according to the American Red Cross.ย St. Maryโs Hospital uses the most blood during September through February, said Tim Buhler, the hospitalโs Blood Bank Section Chief.ย He said the demand for blood increases by about three to five percent each year.ย Patients who are chronically ill and cancer patients are the major users of blood.ย Chemotherapy wipes out a personโs system, so blood and platelet transfusions are necessary.ย
St. Maryโs Hospital hosts a blood drive each month, which rotates between the hospitalโs campus in Leonardtown and the Lexington Park Library, so get out and donate.ย To sign up to donate blood or for more information, contact Health Connections at 301-475-6019 or visit the American Red Cross Web site at www.my-redcross.org.
The upcoming blood drive at the Health Connections building at St. Maryโs Hospital in Leonardtown is Feb. 16 from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.ย Upcoming blood drives at the Lexington Park Library are Jan. 14 and March 11 from noon to 6 p.m.ย
