Upper Marlboro, MD – Editor’s note. The following letter was sent the public Tueday evening, Sept. 4 by Dr. Monica Goldson of Prince George’s County Public Schools.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

There is nothing like being with students, teachers and staff members on the first day of school! The smiles and laughter are contagious; the curiosity and excitement, inspiring.

It was great to start the day with our school bus drivers and to spend time in our schools. I want to thank all of the parents, community members and elected officials who spent time welcoming our students back to school. We are the village that will keep our students on the path towards success. I hope you will look for more opportunities to support our schools all year long.

In light of the expected high temperatures Wednesday, we are dismissing all schools two hours early. We will reassess for Thursday. To date, there have been isolated incidents in various classrooms, but we have kept overall conditions under control. For updates, please make sure that your contact information is on file at your childโ€™s school, sign up for PGCPS e-alerts and monitor the school systemโ€™s web site

For questions and concerns about transportation, please contact Transportation Phone Bank at 301-952-6570 or transpor@pgcps.org. We appreciate your patience to address issues related to assignments and pickup times. We will monitor the amount of time callers have been placed on hold waiting to speak with staff at our phone bank.ย  In addition, we are working with the vendor to resolve glitches with the โ€œHere Comes the Busโ€ app.

Our wellness centers at Northwestern and Oxon Hill high schools are open through Thursday to assist students in need of immunizations. Clinic hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

I hope your child had a wonderful welcome to school, whether it was their first day back or first day ever. While I cannot promise that every day will be perfect, I assure you that we will not stop trying to get it right. Your child deserves nothing less than our best, from the time they arrive at school to the moment they return home.

Today begins our journey together. Let me know how we can improve at ceo@pgcps.org.
