The operators of Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant in Lusby reported the facilityโs second reactor is currently offline for โelectrical maintenance on a control element assembly.โ
According to a spokesman for Constellation Energy Nuclear Group (CENG), the maintenance was deemed necessary following a test conducted Thursday afternoon, Sept. 5.
โAt approximately 5 p.m., operators manually shut down Calvert Cliffs Unit 2 to perform maintenance on a control element assembly,โ stated spokesman Kory Raftery. โOperators followed their training and procedures and the plant shut down as expected. The plant is in stable condition. All safety equipment and systems responded as designed. The safety of Calvert Cliffs and the public was maintained at all times during the shutdown. โ
Raftery reported the plantโs other reactor is operating at 100 percent power. Unit 2 will be returned to service when inspectors complete their investigation, repairs are made and the system is tested. He added that preliminary investigation data indicates the problem is not related to earlier 2013 shutdowns of the second reactor.
