St. Mary’s County, MD –June 19, 10:00 p.m. SMCSO is conducting a sobriety checkpoint in the California area. Ensure you drive carefully and have a designated driver if necessary

La Plata, MD – Members of the Charles County Sheriffโ€™s Office Traffic Operations Unit, in partnership with the Town of La Plata Police Department, Maryland State Police and Maryland Transportation Authority Police, will conduct special operations during the weekend of June 19 through 21 focusing on impaired drivers as part of Marylandโ€™s Checkpoint Strikeforce program.

Officers will conduct a sobriety checkpoint along with saturation patrols in La Plata on Saturday night, June 20.

Prior to conducting the checkpoint, officers will attend a special briefing at the Charles County Sheriffโ€™s Office Headquarters at 7:30 p.m. where they will listen to remarks from several people whose lives were impacted as a result of impaired driving. Among those speaking are family members of Autumn Jenkins, a 20 year-old woman and member of the Nanjemoy Volunteer Fire Department who was killed by a drunk driver earlier this year. A photo of Ms. Jenkins will be posted at the sobriety checkpoint as a reminder that driving while impaired can result in lives lost.

Members of MADD and the MADD Victims Panel will also be in attendance. For more information about Checkpoint Strikeforce, visit http://www.checkpointstrikeforce.net.
