Waldorf, MD – The owners of a commercial farm in Charles County are grieving the loss of two beloved dogsโ€”both shot to death over the Independence Day weekend.

โ€œItโ€™s just not clear what happened,โ€ Charles County Sheriffโ€™s Office spokeswoman Diane Richardson told The Bay Net. Authorities are not sure if the killings were intentional or random.

The two dogsโ€”Benelli, a female, and her male offspring Bearโ€”were reported missing Friday evening, July 3. The dogsโ€™ owners, who operate Zekiah Farms in Waldorf, stated on the businessโ€™s Facebook page that the deceased animals were located Monday, July 6 in the area of Bryantown Road and Booth Place.

โ€œThese were friendly and loving dogs,โ€ the owners stated in their post. โ€œThey play with school children and customers who come to visit the farm. They are always around animals and would not hurt any. This was a mean, hateful and senseless crime. Please help us find who would do this to loving animals.โ€

Richardson said police have no leads at this time. Police have determined that the weapon used was a rifle.
