Prince George's County Man Identified In Fatal Police Shooting

OXON HILL, Md. – The Maryland Office of the Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division (IID) has released the identities of the man fatally shot by police and the officers involved in Sunday’s officer-involved shooting in Oxon Hill.

The decedent has been identified as 44-year-old Aevon Bucknor Jr., a resident of Oxon Hill. According to investigators, Bucknor was shot after allegedly advancing toward officers with a knife near the intersection of St. George Boulevard and Potomac Passage around 10 a.m. on April 20, 2025.

The officers who discharged their weapons are Corporal Phillip Johnson, an 18-year veteran, and Acting Lieutenant James Martinez, a 13-year veteran. Both are assigned to the Bureau of Patrol with the Prince George’s County Police Department.

The incident followed an earlier domestic-related stabbing at an apartment on Indian Head Highway, where police found a man and woman with critical injuries. Authorities believe Bucknor, who reportedly lived at National Harbor, was responsible for both the stabbing and setting fire to the apartment before fleeing the scene.

Body-worn and surveillance camera footage captured the fatal encounter, showing Bucknor advancing with a knife despite officers’ verbal commands. After being shot, he walked several feet before collapsing. Officers rendered aid until emergency services arrived, but Bucknor was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The IID continues to investigate the circumstances of the shooting. Officials ask anyone with information to contact the division at (410) 576-7070 or IID@oag.state.md.us. The body-worn camera footage is expected to be released within 20 business days, pending protocol and family notification.
