Calvert County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jack Smith said March 21 that a committee will present โ€œat least two plansโ€ this May for redistricting enrollments at the countyโ€™s northeast elementary schools.

The redistricting process is being pursued as a way to ease severe overcrowding at Beach Elementary School (BES) in Chesapeake Beach. Smith said the committee should have the plans in time for a May 23 Calvert Board of Education (BOE) work session.

The superintendent reported the committee to be named will be comprised of PTA representatives of the four elementary schools affected by the processโ€”BES, Windy Hill, Plum Point and Sunderlandโ€”Calvert County Public Schoolsโ€™ (CCPS) departments of Transportation, Student Services and Facilities; one principal, Chesapeake Beach town staff and a representative from the Calvert County Governmentโ€™s Department of Community Planning and Building.

โ€œWe need to forge ahead,โ€ said Smith, who indicated the two obligatory public hearings would be held in June.

Executive Director of Administration Kimberly Roof confirmed CCPS would not be processing any transfer requests pertaining to the four elementary schools while the redistricting issue was being decided.
