LEONARDTOWN, Md. — First responders in St. Mary’s County reunited this month with a young woman whose life they helped save after she suffered a severe allergic reaction that led to cardiac arrest earlier this year.
The reunion, held April 15, 2026, brought together emergency medical personnel from the St. Mary’s County Department of Emergency Services and the patient and her family, offering a rare opportunity for crews to see the outcome of a life-or-death call.
According to officials, the incident occurred in February when emergency medical services responded to a 911 call for a severe allergic reaction. Upon arrival, crews found the patient in significant respiratory distress consistent with anaphylaxis, a potentially fatal condition that can rapidly block airways and lead to shock.
First responders immediately administered life-saving medications and initiated advanced life support care as additional units arrived. Despite those efforts, the patient’s condition worsened during transport, and she went into cardiac arrest.
Emergency crews began CPR and continued resuscitation efforts upon arrival at MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital, where medical staff were able to restore her pulse.
Officials said the patient has since made a full recovery.
For many first responders, calls like this end once the patient is transferred to hospital staff. The opportunity to reunite with a survivor is rare and served as a powerful reminder of the impact of rapid response, training, and coordination between EMS and hospital teams.
St. Mary’s County officials also credited staff at MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital for their role in the patient’s recovery.
“This was a true team effort,” the department said, highlighting the collaboration between EMS crews and hospital personnel that ultimately led to the life-saving outcome.
