The Maryland Grazers Network and Chesapeake Bay Foundation in partnership with the Southern Maryland Agricultural Development Commission and the University of Maryland Extension will host an on-farm ‘grazing’ workshop for grass-based livestock producers on August 24 from 3 to 8 p.m., at Clagett Farm, 11904 Old Marlboro Pike, Upper Marlboro, MD 20772.
This is a great opportunity for any livestock farmer with some pasture, as well as farmers who may be thinking about changes to their production system or considering grass-based livestock production for the first time.
The workshop, which features a pasture walk and presentations, will focus on the production and management of high-quality pastures for cows, sheep and goats, to ensure profitability while enhancing soil and pasture quality.
Topics include understanding forage testing, exploring the benefits of quality summer forages as key to high-quality meats and which varieties are best suited for Southern Maryland. How to choose animals and identify genetics for grass-based systems and understanding grass-fed raising standards.
Plus hear presentations on the Southern Maryland Meats program, on-farm licensing requirements, simple and effective options for direct marketing and information about cost share opportunities specific to grazing.
Space is limited to 30 participants on a first come, first served basis. Registration will close on Friday, August 19. A fee of $10 includes workshop materials and a light meal featuring burgers and ice cream (both from 100 percent grass-finished cows).
