On Wednesday, Jan. 20, the Lackey Chargers came to the Birdcage in Leonardtown for a fierce battle with the Leonardtown Raiders. The game started slowly for both teams as neither could find an offensive rhythm and there were no points were scored by either team in the first three and a half minutes.
The Raiders scored the first points on a three pointer by Ryan Vanderwest (8 points) and never lost the lead en route to a 50-39 victory. The Raiders were led by Shawn Miedenskiโs 12 points and the senior leadership showed all game long as Lackey kept trying to battle back cutting the 11 point halftime lead down to four late in the fourth quarter.
A hard intentional foul late in the game on Vanderwest by Dominic Phillips sealed the deal for the Raiders. The call gave the Raiders two important foul shots and possession of the ball. However, the play also injured a Raider cheerleader in front of the student section when both players fell out of bounds into the cheerleader, who was carried off the court and taken to St Marys Hospital for x-rays to her leg.
The Chargers were led by Phillipsโ 14 points and strong play in the paint by Lackeyโs Player of The Game, Troy Carroll (8 points). Michael Aikens (9 points and 9 rebounds)was named the Raiders Papa Johnโs Player of the Game and Guard Nick Shade added 9 points.
