BALTIMORE, Md. — As of Tuesday, Jan. 6, John Harbaugh is no longer the head coach of the Baltimore Ravens, according to a statement from Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti.
“Following a comprehensive evaluation of the season and the overall direction of our organization, I decided to make a change at head coach. Today I informed John that he has been relieved of his duties,” Bisciotti said in a statement. “This was an incredibly difficult decision, given the tremendous 18 years we have spent together and the profound respect I have for John as a coach and, most importantly, as a great man of integrity.
“Throughout what I firmly believe is a Hall of Fame coaching career, John has delivered a Super Bowl championship to Baltimore and served as a steadfast pillar of humility and leadership. He and his family have deeply embedded themselves in this community. For these profound contributions, on and off the field, we should all be forever grateful.”
Harbaugh took over the Ravens in 2008. His 18-year Ravens career ends with a 180-113 regular-season record. With Harbaugh, the Ravens reached 12 playoff seasons, four American Football Conference (AFC) title games and were Super Bowl XLVII champions. He is the winningest coach in Ravens history.
However, the Ravens suffered from a lackluster 8-9 season this year and failed to make the playoffs. Fans had high expectations for the season, but injuries stymied those goals early on.
Harbaugh also released a statement, saying, “Well, I was hoping for a different kind of message on my last day here, someday, but that day has come today. 😊 It comes with disappointment certainly, but more with GRATITUDE & APPRECIATION.”
Fans and analysts are already busy speculating about where Harbaugh — a respected figure among many — will land, and who will be the next Ravens head coach. The Ravens have not yet released any information about their search.
