Hoyer Voices Concern over Railroad Realignment Alternatives through District

WASHINGTON, DC Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD)ย released a statement todayย regarding the findings ofย the National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC) Railroad Realignment Feasibility Study, whichย examines relocating freight lines – potentially carrying hazardous materials – away fromย the city’s monumental core. The study identifies threeย alternatives, two of which wouldย run primarilyย through Hoyer’s 5th Congressional District.

“Although the current freight route throughย the National Capital Region rightfully merits study as a matter of homeland security, I have serious concerns about theย report’s proposedย alternatives through Prince George’s and Charles Counties . Such alternatives are difficult to assess without knowing the precise environmental, economic, security and quality-of-lifeย impactย that they might haveย on the communities alongย the identifiedย corridors.

“I understand this is only a preliminary study, however, I believeย that extensive further examination isย needed to determine theย exact costs and benefits associated with the proposedย bypasses and what other viable options might be available. While I remain supportive of effortsย to secureย the National Capital Region by reducingย the threats posed byย hazardous cargo, I would be strongly opposed to any plan that would only shift theย potential risk to other partsย of theย region orย that would come at the expense ofย the communities alongย the alternative routes.”
