LEONARDTOWN, Md. — Families from across Southern Maryland gathered Saturday at the St. Mary’s County Fairgrounds for the 43rd annual Easter Egg Festival, enjoying a day filled with springtime traditions, community spirit, and family-friendly fun.
Held from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., the free event welcomed hundreds of children and parents eager to celebrate the season. While general admission was free, children participated in the highly anticipated egg hunts for a $7 ticket, with many families purchasing spots in advance or on-site.
Throughout the day, children could be seen racing across designated areas collecting brightly colored eggs, their baskets quickly filling as laughter echoed across the fairgrounds. Age-grouped hunts ensured that everyone, from toddlers to older children, had a chance to participate safely and enjoyably.
Beyond the egg hunts, the festival offered a wide range of free activities designed to keep families engaged. Children lined up for face painting, admired intricate balloon creations, and participated in hands-on arts and crafts. Demonstrations, including marbles displays, added an interactive and educational element to the event.
The festival also highlighted the region’s small businesses and organizations. With 16 food vendors on site, attendees had no shortage of options, from classic fair favorites to local specialties. Dozens of community groups and businesses set up booths, offering information, giveaways, and opportunities to connect with residents.
A popular stop for many families was the Farm & Garden Building, where raffle tickets were sold for a chance to win gift baskets, gift cards, and local recreational experiences. Winners were announced throughout the afternoon between 2 and 3:30 p.m., drawing excited crowds hoping to take home prizes.
The annual festival, now in its 43rd year, continues to serve as a seasonal tradition for St. Mary’s County families. Its combination of affordability, variety, and community involvement makes it a staple event that signals the arrival of spring.
As families departed with baskets full of eggs, painted faces, and full stomachs, many were already looking ahead to next year’s celebration, another opportunity to gather, connect, and create lasting memories.
