ANNAPOLIS, MD – The Governor’s Office of Crime Control & Prevention today announced that its Executive Director Glenn Fueston has been named one of four Regional Chairs of the National Criminal Justice Association (NCJA) Executive Committee for the 2017-2018 term. The election took place during the organization’s July 30th Advisory Council meeting, coinciding with the 2017 National Forum on Criminal Justice in Long Beach, CA.

Representatives from the Governor’s Office of Crime Control & Prevention regularly attend the annual forum which brings together effective programs, research, and technologies that help justice practitioners and decision makers address pressing public safety issues. This year, Executive Director Fueston was invited as a panelist for a special session centered on data access issues before accepting his position on the Executive Committee.

Executive Director Fueston plans to leverage Maryland’s successful criminal justice initiatives to benefit the direction of the NCJA, which has recently focused on emerging national concerns such as comprehensive responses to the opioid crisis and addiction, criminal justice reform, recidivism reduction, and local impacts of federal activities.

Maryland’s recent adoption and implementation of the Justice Reinvestment Act brings the state to the front of a national trend of 27 states seeking to improve the justice system with evidence-based practices. As the recipient of federal technical assistance for this initiative and a provider of input and expertise to a number of regional and national groups, the Governor’s Office of Crime Control and Prevention is uniquely prepared to represent the evolving needs of states pursuing these reforms.

“The Governor’s Office of Crime Control & Prevention is honored to contribute to the National Criminal Justice Association in this capacity and is confident that the responses and lessons learned in Maryland will be of value to the organization as a whole and to its members across the country”, said Fueston. “The Office has benefited greatly from federal and national partnerships on justice-related issues and is committed to incorporating and promoting effective practices from these partnerships to build a safer Maryland.”
