CALVERT COUNTY, Md. – The Calvert County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a region-wide scam that has recently been reported by multiple citizens.

Several individuals have contacted our office stating they received phone calls from someone claiming to be a Calvert County Sheriff’s Office deputy. The caller advised them they had an outstanding warrant, missed jury duty, or needed to pay bail for a relative in detention. Victims were then instructed to immediately pay a fine or fee—often being directed to purchase pre-paid or gift cards, or to send money through Zelle, Venmo, Bitcoin, or similar services.

👉 Please be aware:

The Calvert County Sheriff’s Office will NEVER call and demand payment for an outstanding warrant, missed jury duty, or bail.

If someone calls claiming you owe money and instructs you to pay using gift cards, Green Dot cards, pre-paid credit cards, cryptocurrency, or money transfer apps, you are very likely being scammed.

If you receive a suspicious call:

• Do not provide personal or financial information

• Do not send money

• Hang up and independently verify by calling the agency or company directly

Unfortunately, scams occur every day and impact people of all ages. We encourage everyone to discuss these scams with friends and family, especially seniors, to help prevent further victims.
