With the opening of Evergreen Elementary School in August 2009, the superintendent of schools, Dr. Michael J. Martirano, appointed a redistricting committee as outlined in policy JCAA to review options and provide a recommendation on utilizing the new capacity at the elementary level.

This committee was also tasked with assigning the military housing located in California area to an elementary, middle, and high school. These areas were temporarily assigned during the construction of the military housing to accommodate the Patuxent River Naval Air Stationโ€™s transitioning of military housing.

The committee is also charged with looking at an area of Westbury in the Lexington Park area that in previous redistricting was intended to go to Spring Ridge Middle School.ย

The committee, which consisted of 50 percent staff members and 50 percent community members, met throughout the months of October and November. Other community members not on the committee did attend the meetings and were allowed to provide input during the process.

The committee reached consensus on the proposed boundary alignment plans on Nov. 19, 2008.ย  The plans were then presented to the superintendent of schools on Dec. 8, 2008.ย  The Board of Education of St. Maryโ€™s County reviewed the plan during a work session on Jan. 14, and will hold a public hearing on the proposed boundary alignment plans on Jan. 26, at 6 p.m. in the Board of Education Meeting Room, Central Administration, 23160 Moakley Street, Leonardtown, MD.

The Board is scheduled to take action on the proposed plans on Feb. 11.The plans are summarized below and can be viewed in their entirety in the presentation to the Boardโ€™s Jan. 14, work session meeting located on the school systemโ€™s website: www.smcps.org/offices/dss/capital_planning/SBAC.shtml. Due to the size of the presentation, it is divided into four sections.ย
