Swift action taken by a high school student, a teacher and a Charles County Sheriff’s Office School Resource Unit officer at North Point High School yesterday led to the arrest of a 20-year-old Waldorf man minutes after he and an accomplice entered the school without authorization and robbed the student of shoes, Charles County Sheriff Rex Coffey has announced.

Officer R. Anderson was monitoring dismissal at Davis Middle School at 3:10 p.m. Nov. 29 when a teacher at the neighboring North Point High School, located at 2500 Davis Road in Waldorf, approached him to report the robbery. The initial investigation revealed that shortly after the North Point’s dismissal bell rang, two men in their 20s who were not students entered the school and approached the student, a 17-year-old male, in the hallway. One of the men, later identified as Daryl Timothy Young, 20, of Waldorf, stole a pair of Nike Air Jordan Olympic 7 Retro basketball sneakers, which the student was carrying. During the robbery, Young reached for his waistband and implied he had a weapon. The teacher witnessed the incident and confronted Young, who again reached for his waistband and implied he was armed. Young and his accomplice left the school and had last been seen walking down Davis Road.

Officer Anderson entered is patrol car and drove down Davis Road, where he quickly found and detained the two suspects. As a result of the investigation, the officer charged Young with robbery and transported him to the Charles County Detention Center, where he was being held pending an appearance before a district court commissioner. Charges are pending against the accomplice.

 “As the Sheriff and a parent, I am impressed by the student, the teacher and Officer Anderson, who all did exactly what they should have when this incident occurred,” said Sheriff Coffey. “The theft of expensive sneakers is not uncommon but a crime like this at our schools is rare. Fortunately, the audacity of the two individuals who walked into North Point without permission and committed a strong-arm robbery is no match for the fast, astute response by everyone involved.”

There is no indication that the victim and the accused were acquainted. Neither Young nor his accomplice were students at North Point.
