On March 31, 2015 at 10:33 PM, a female victim, who is 86 years old, called 9 1 1 and reported a man was banging on her door demanding to be let inside.

The victim did not know who the man was. Corporal Corcoran responded to the victim’s residence located on Iverson Drive in Great Mills. Prior to deputies arriving on scene, the male suspect attempted to force entry into the victim’s apartment.

Corporal Corcoran located the suspect, identified as Steven Thomas Miller, age 37, of Great Mills, standing on the sidewalk nearby. Miller was holding a metal tipped umbrella and started to walk away as Corporal Corcoran approached. Miller had a blank stare on his face and refused to answer any questions. Miller was ordered several times to drop the umbrella and sit down and he refused. Miller then began to walk toward Corporal Corcoran with the umbrella. He refused all orders to stop. As Miller was about to strike Corporal Corcoran with the umbrella, Corporal Corcoran deployed his TASER. However, Miller continued to charge Corporal Corcoran and was taken into custody with the assistance of additional deputies and after a struggle on the ground.

Miller was transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center. While being booked, Miller jumped up and grabbed Correction Officer Michael Graves by his shirt in the chest area. Miller continued to violently resist until Deputy Steinbach deployed his TASER, which ended Miller’s assault and allowed officers to gain control over him.

Miller was charged with 4th Degree Burglary, 2 COUNTS 2nd Degree Assault, Resisting Arrest, and Disorderly Conduct.
