
HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – The St. Mary’s College of Maryland Baseball Team (1-1) matched up against Bates College (1-2) on the campus of Hampden-Sydney. The Seahawks earned their first win of the year, taking down the Bobcats
How It Happened
- The Seahawks took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Derrick Booker reached home plate on a Chase O’Dell sac fly. Cole Tarleton gave St. Mary’s their second run of the inning when he advanced home on a wild pitch. The Seahawks would add to their lead in the top of the third after George Berbakos hit an RBI single to allow Derrick Booker to score from second. Booker doubled earlier in the inning. The Seahawks led 3-1 after three full innings.
- St. Mary’s would add a couple more runs in the top of the fourth inning after capitalizing on a couple of Bobcat wild pitches. Derrick Booker continued his strong start from the plate by adding an RBI triple in the inning. Bates would go on to score four runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it a 6-5 game. The Seahawks responded nicely in the top of the fifth with two more runs. Gavin Wathen recorded an RBI sac fly and Cole Tarleton would go on to score on a wild pitch. St. Mary’s led 8-6 going into the final three innings.
- The top of the eighth inning would prove to be the most productive for the Seahawks on the scoreboard. Gavin Wathen and Cole Tarleton each recorded RBIs while three more runs were scored off of mistakes from the Bobcats’ pitching. St. Mary’s extended their lead to 13-6 and would hold on to win by that same score.
Inside the Box Score
- Derrick Booker had an RBI off of three hits.
- Chase O’Dell, Gavin Wathen, and Layne Lesko each recorded two hits. Wathen recorded a team-high two RBIs.
- Jack Overton, Erik Thomas, Michael Roeder, and Nick Russo all made appearances on the mound for St. Mary’s. Russo faced 18 batters and struck out four while giving up zero earned runs.
