Seahawks Women’s Indoor Track & Field Take Second At United East Championships

LANDOVER, Md. – The St. Mary’s College of Maryland women’s indoor track & field team placed second at the inaugural United East Conference Women’s Indoor Track & Field Championships Monday (Feb. 26) as it came down to the wire.

St. Mary’s College finished second in the seven-team field with 135.5 points, being edged by Penn State Behrend for the title as the Nittany Lions tallied 136.666 points.

The Seahawks notched 13 personal-best marks and five school records while sophomore Dina Jones (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) earned the Elite 20 Award.

How It Happened

  • Senior captain Brittney Douglas (Port Republic, Md./Calvert) captured the 800m run with a time of 2:29.43 while sophomore captain Savannah Owens (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) placed fifth in 2:37.86. First-year Kaylee Holston (Sunderland, Md./Huntingtown) posted a personal record of 2:40.48 for seventh place while Jones clocked a personal record of 2:52.74 for 10th. Sophomore Pamela Angel-Aguilar (Millersville, Md./Old Mill) ran a season-best time of 306.62 for 11th while first-year Alexis Hodges (Sugarland, Texas/Chopticon [Md.]) came in 12th with a personal record of 3:11.45.
  • Senior captain Betsy Robey (Kensington, Md./Stone Ridge) claimed first place in the 5000m run with a 20:47.07 while first-year Madison Kingsley (White Hall, Md./North Harford) finished fourth in 21:50.95 and first-year Weiya Carter (Towson, Md./Towson) placed fifth in 22:34.48.
  • Sophomore Chay’la Rivers (Baltimore, Md./Reach! Partnership) ran a school record and personal-best time of 10.09 to win the 60m hurdles. Rivers surpassed her own school record of 10.79 from a month ago.
  • First-year Avery Arizzi (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) garnered a second-place finish in the 400m dash with a school and personal record time of 1:02.72. Arizzi shaved off 0.20 seconds from her previous school record of 1:02.92 from a month ago.
  • In addition, three other Seahawks notched season-best times in the 400m dash as Owens placed fourth with a season-best time of 1:03.47 followed by junior Elise Kinyanjui (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) in eighth with a season-best time of 1:07.36. Sophomore Chloe Tolson (Waldorf, Md./North Point) clocked a season-best time of 1:09.49 for 10th.
  • The foursome of Owens, Douglas, Kinyanjui, and Arizzi set a school record in the 4x400m relay, crossing the finish line in 4:17.32 for second place. They broke the old record of 4:29.94 from January 12.
  • First-year Jillian Zukley (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) claimed a silver medal in the shot put with a throw of 11.62m while sophomore Nayev Pumphrey (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore City College) posted a season-best distance of 7.76m for 15th.
  • Kinyanjui led the Seahawks in the high jump with a third-place finish after clearing a height of 1.40m while Rivers placed fifth with a personal record of 1.35m.
  • Douglas ran a season-best time of 5:45.94 in the 1-mile run to place fourth while Holston clocked a personal record of 5:54.45 for fifth place. Junior Ariana Lecouras (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) reached the podium with a sixth-place finish in 6:33.18.
  • Robey posted a fourth-place finish in the 3000m run with a personal-best time of 11:47.35 while Kingsley came in fifth in 12:23.22. Lecouras took sixth with a season-best time of 12:36.37 while Carter reached the podium as well with a seventh-place finish in a personal record of 12:41.77.
  • The Seahawks placed fourth in the distance medley relay with a time of 15:08.13 behind the efforts of Holston, fifth-year Ariat Ojulu (Baltimore, Md./Dundalk), Jones, and Lecouras.
  • Rivers collected a fourth-place finish in the triple jump with a school record and personal-best distance of 10.11m, surpassing her own school record of 9.94m from January 20.
  • Rivers then added a fifth-place finish in the 60m dash with a school and personal-record of 8.22. She broke her own school record of 8.46 from January 26. She also tacked on a pair of sixth-place finishes in the 200m dash with a season-best time of 28.07 and in the long jump with a personal record of 4.50m.
  • Sophomore captain Fladaina Bruno (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) garnered a sixth-place finish in the weight throw with a throw of 11.08m while Zukley placed seventh with 11.02m. Additionally, Pumphrey notched a personal record of 10.29m for ninth place.
