CALIFORNIA, Md. — Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to develop across Southern Maryland Thursday afternoon and evening, bringing the potential for damaging winds, large hail and locally heavy rainfall.
The National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington office has placed much of the region under a Level 2 of 5 “Slight Risk” for severe weather Thursday, Aug. 27, 2026.
The greatest threat is expected from roughly 4 p.m. through 10 p.m.
Forecasters say the primary threats across Southern Maryland will be damaging wind gusts around 60 mph and hail around 1 inch in diameter.
Charles, Calvert and St. Mary’s counties are included in the National Weather Service outlook for scattered severe thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds and large hail through Thursday evening.
Multiple rounds of heavy rain could also result in flash flooding, particularly in urban, low-lying and poor-drainage areas. Low-water crossings could also flood where repeated heavy rainfall occurs.
The National Weather Service notes that an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out across northeastern Maryland, but the higher tornado concern is north and east of Southern Maryland.
Residents should monitor weather conditions throughout the afternoon and evening and make sure they have a way to receive watches and warnings.
Drivers should also be prepared for periods of heavy rain, reduced visibility and possible ponding on roadways.
The severe weather threat is expected to diminish later Thursday evening.
