A Severe Thunderstorm Warning issued for Charles County.
California, MD – Severe thunderstorms are rolling across the East Coast, breaking a heatwave that killed four in Maryland and impacted millions in the central and eastern U.S.
The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm watch throughout the Baltimore/Washington area as a “slow moving cold front” descends on the region from the Ohio Valley. The rain may lead to serious flooding and is caused by the cold front combining with the air from the recent heat wave that affected the area.
On the bright side, the cold air – and consequential storms – will put an end to the recent heat wave, possibly leading to “below normal” temperatures as low as the 70s on Tuesday.
The weekend’s barrage of humidity and heat combined for a peak heat index of 108°F Sunday at the St. Mary’s County Airport, according to the National Weather Service’s 3-Day History. Saturday saw the longest sustained period of heat over 100°F, with approximately ten hours above the triple digit mark.
Publications are reporting that six total deaths were caused this weekend by the heatwave.
