SOUTHERN MARYLAND — A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect for Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s counties until 9 p.m. Wednesday as storms capable of producing damaging winds, hail and frequent lightning are possible across the region.
The National Weather Service issued the watch at 1:15 p.m. on May 27, 2026.
According to the watch information, scattered wind gusts up to 65 mph are likely, isolated hail up to ping-pong size is possible and frequent lightning may occur.
The watch includes all of Southern Maryland, including communities such as Waldorf, St. Charles, Dunkirk, Chesapeake Beach, California, Callaway, Lexington Park, Piney Point, Ridge and surrounding areas.
A severe thunderstorm watch means conditions are favorable for severe storms to develop. Residents should monitor updated forecasts and be ready to move indoors if warnings are issued.
Storms may bring down trees or power lines, cause scattered outages and make travel difficult during heavy rain. Residents should secure loose outdoor items, avoid being on the water and keep phones charged in case warnings are issued later today.
The watch also includes portions of Virginia and eastern West Virginia.
