There is something magical about live theatre and something more magical about live outdoor theatre at HSMC. Celebrating our third year of Shakespeare in the City we are proud to present Twelfth Night, a comedy believed to have been written for Twelfth Night entertainment at the close of the Christmas season.
Though the plot is not specific to the Christmas season, the show is full of presents for the whole family. The play centers on twins Viola and Sebastian, who are separated in a shipwreck. Viola (disguised as a man) falls in love with Duke Orsino, who is in love with the Countess Olivia. Unfortunately for Orsino, Countess Olivia falls in love with Viola thinking she is a man. Add in a singing fool, a big practical joke, characters with names like Aguecheek (pronounced AY-gyoo-cheek) and Belch and you know you are in for an evening of fun and frivolity.
Live outdoor theatre is exciting, but also comes with its own set of unique challenges. We get asked all the time about what happens if it rains, if it’s too hot, and “what about mosquitoes?” We always respond “the show will go on.” We have a tent under which we can perform in case of rain. Chairs are available to rent if you forget your own. Bug repellant will be available for purchase. If food is your desire, you can preorder a picnic dinner from Expressions of St Mary’s 48 hours in advance of the performance you are attending. Snacks will also be available for purchase each night.
Come join us this year for Twelfth Night, performing August 14th, 15th, 20th, 21st, and 22nd, at 730 pm. Remember… “The show will go on!”
