Coworkers describe Nelson Neme as honest, dependable, helpful and funny. The perpetrator of a theft of county property is probably not laughing, but three of Nemeโ€™s traits likely saved Calvert County taxpayers some money recently. Neme works as a Parks and Recreation Division custodian at Southern Community Center in Lusby. His actions that aided police in bringing a thief to justice were rewarded Tuesday, April 15 when Neme was honored as Calvert County Governmentโ€™s Employee of the Month for April.

According to a summary submitted to the Calvert County Commissioners by Employee Recognition Committee (ERC) Chair Kim Gott, Neme was working at the center on a Saturday. โ€œAs he was completing his normal work activities he noticed a person in the craft room removing boxes and loading them into their car,โ€ Gott stated. โ€œHe [Neme] was not sure if this person was authorized to be removing supplies. There was no supervisor for him to consult, so Nelson took a photo of the person. He provided the photo to his supervisor on Monday. It turned out that the person was not authorized and was stealing ceramics supplies. The photo was used to identify the person.โ€

Gott said the identification led to the recovery of โ€œhundreds of dollars in supplies.โ€

โ€œHe [Neme] was a great witness,โ€ said ERC member Burgess Wood.

โ€œHeโ€™s the man who keeps it going,โ€ said Parks and Recreation Division Chief Doug Meadows. โ€œTo take the initiative to see something isnโ€™t quite rightโ€”our facility is in good hands.โ€

Calvert County Governmentโ€™s Employees of the Month each receive a certificate and a nominal check. The monthly honorees also become eligible for Employee of the Year honors.
