Sheriff Timothy K. Cameron announces open enrollment for the 2012 Fall Citizens Academy.ย  The academy is designed to give an inside look into our day-to-day operations.ย  Sessions are held on Thursday nights from 6:00 โ€“ 9:00 p.m. for an eight week period.ย  The 2012 Fall Session of Citizens Academy will begin on September 27th, 2012 and end on November 15th, 2012.

Who can attend? Anyone over the age of 18 interested in attending the Sheriffโ€™s Office Citizens Academy is welcome to apply. Applications are accepted for all future academies. Just complete the attached application form and deliver it to the St. Maryโ€™s County Sheriffโ€™s Office or drop it in the mail. The application will be processed and you will be contacted when the class is scheduled to begin. Hurry and send your application; as space is limited.

When and Where? The free classes are held at the Sheriffโ€™s Office Headquarters Building located at 23150 Leonard Hall Drive in Leonardtown. The 8-week course is held on Thursdays, in 3-hour sessions.

TYPICAL COURSE OUTLINE

FIRST CLASS

In the first class you will meet the top administrators of the St. Maryโ€™s County Sheriffโ€™s Office and learn the goals and objectives of the Citizens Academy Program. The Special Operations Division will showcase all of their specialty vehicles such as our Mobile Command Center and brief you on the many aspects of the division to include High School & Middle

School Resource Officers, DARE, Community Policing, etc. Our Accreditation Manager will walk you through the law enforcement accreditation process and show you how the St. Maryโ€™s County Sheriffโ€™s Office meets and maintains the highest standards in law enforcement. The last hour begins with the Office of Professional Responsibilities where procedures for citizen complaints and employee discipline are reviewed and we will conclude the evening with a tour of our Headquarters facility.

SECOND CLASS

Participants will test their skills on a simulated DUI course followed by presentations of our Alcohol Enforcement Coordinator and Traffic Safety Supervisor. A member of our Accident Reconstruction Team will close the evening with a presentation of how we reconstruct serious and fatal accidents to determine the factors involved.

THIRD CLASS

We begin the evening with an introduction of our K-9 Officers and their partners during an astounding demonstration. In the second hour of the class you will meet uniformed Patrol Deputies who will discuss various situations encountered on routine patrol. Youโ€™ll have the opportunity to see all the lat
