Feb. 18 MCASA is testifying in support of Senate Bill 477, legislation to allow victim/survivors of dating and sexual violence to seek protective orders.
Currently, these survivors may seek peace orders. Dating and sexual violence cases are volatile cases that need the special attention that a protective order produces.
Protective orders are longer and more services are available to help petitioners in these cases.
Law enforcement agencies have extensive protocols associated with protective orders to help prevent future abuse, including receiving automatic notification when a protective order is issued. Courts also have greater discretion in these cases and may issue protective orders at any time after abuse occurs.
If you feel strongly about this issue you can contact members of the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee today and call upon them to support SB477.
