HOLLYWOOD, Md. — A late-night traffic stop in St. Mary’s County led to the discovery of suspected cocaine and drug paraphernalia inside a vehicle and on a driver, according to court documents.

William Lamar Herndon, 37, of Hollywood, is facing multiple misdemeanor drug charges following the May 1, 2026 incident.

According to the statement of probable cause, a Maryland State Police trooper was on patrol around 2:55 a.m. in the area of Three Notch Road and St. Johns Road when a white Chrysler sedan was observed operating with an inoperable headlight. A traffic stop was conducted after the trooper activated emergency equipment.

Herndon, identified as the sole occupant of the vehicle, was contacted by the trooper. While speaking with him, the trooper observed two glass smoking devices in the center console in plain view.

A probable cause search of the vehicle led to the discovery of a plastic straw containing a white powdery substance consistent with suspected cocaine residue, along with the smoking devices believed to contain crack cocaine residue.

Authorities said Herndon was advised of his Miranda rights and waived them. When asked about the paraphernalia, he told troopers it belonged to a friend, according to the report.

A search of Herndon’s person later revealed a folded paper towel in his jacket pocket containing a white powdery substance suspected to be cocaine.

Herndon was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance and two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia.

Court records show he was released on recognizance on May 1, 2026.

A trial — officer scheduling hearing is set for June 29, 2026 in St. Mary’s District Court.

Under Maryland law, possession of a controlled dangerous substance carries a maximum penalty of up to one year in jail and a $5,000 fine, while paraphernalia charges can carry fines of up to $500.
