The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs traveled out to Texas to take on the Sugar Land Skeeters for the final time in the 2013 Atlantic League regular season. In the first of a four-game series versus the Freedom Division first half champions the Blue Crabs called upon left-handed pitcher Wade Korpi to keep their momentum rolling after taking three of four from the Bridgeport Bluefish over the weekend.
After falling behind 1-0 early on the contest, the Blue Crabs offense rallied in the top of the seventh against starter David Pauley. With one out, LF Cole Garner and CF Sean Smith singled. Following a SS Wladimir Sutil walk, Garner came around to score on a Pauley wild pitch. Right fielder, Brian Barton, followed with a two-run triple that scored both Sutil and Smith to give the Crabs a 3-1 lead.
The lead did not last, however, as the Skeeters stormed back for five runs in the home half of the seventh to take a 6-3 lead. Four bases-loaded singles by the Skeeters hitters highlighted the five-run frame as all but two Skeeters would record a hit on the night.
The Crabs rallied for a run in the top-half of the eight inning but it wasnโt enough as the Sugar Land Skeeters held on for the 7-4 victory.
