Tavon Purnell Matthews

Waldorf, MD – A Charles County resident who was shot to death at his home Sunday, Feb. 18 is being remembered by his family as “a good man.” The victim, Tavon Purnell Matthews, 37 of Waldorf, sustained a gunshot wound to the torso. Emergency medical personnel responded to Matthews’ home on Oak Manor Drive in Waldorf around 11:25 a.m. Matthews was transported to a hospital where he subsequently died. His girlfriend, identified by Charles County authorities as Tiffany Jade Smith, 31 of Waldorf, was charged with shooting Matthews during an argument.
The Charles County Sheriff’s Office reported Smith has been charged with first-degree murder, first-degree assault and firearm use in a felony/violent crime.

According to court records, Smith is being held without bond. A preliminary hearing on the charges Smith is facing is tentatively scheduled for March 14 in District Court.
Matthews’ family has set up a GoFundMe page to gather funds for his funeral and aid his two surviving daughters. A family spokesperson told TheBayNet.com that Sewell Funeral Home in Calvert County is handling arrangements for Matthews.

The case remains under investigation by the Charles County Sheriff’s Office’s Criminal Investigations Division. The lead investigator is Detective B. Buchanan.
