Charles County Chamber of Commerce Bestows Economic Engine Award
LA PLATA, Md. – September 20, 2012, SMO received an Economic Engine Award from the Charles County Chamber of Commerce for being among the ten largest employers in Charles County.
“Economic engines like SMO provide job opportunities that allow our residents and others to use their skills to better themselves and their families through employment,” said Darlene Breck, Past President of the Charles County Chamber. “These employees then buy products, pay for services, contribute to worthy causes, and contribute in countless ways to the economic and social advancement of our community.
SMO has been contributing to the economic advancement of Charles County for over 86 years. Today, SMO directly employs nearly 200 employees. When we add in all employees of The Wills Group, SMO’s parent company that is headquartered in La Plata and also owns Dash In, there are around 300 employees. Those figures do not include additional employees who work at Dash In franchises.
“It was an honor for SMO to be recognized as a top employer in Charles County,” said John Combs, President of SMO. “We have a tremendous group of employees who work hard every day to deliver propane and heating oil, even when it’s snowing and freezing outside. When furnaces break in the middle of the night, we’re there to fix or replace them. We work hard to take care of Charles County residents in their homes and are proud as an organization to keep so many people at work too.”
In addition to SMO, other top employers recognized at the First Annual Economic Engine Awards Ceremony included the Charles County Government, Charles County Public Schools, Charles County Sherriff’s Office, Civista Health, College of Southern Maryland, Facchina Group of Companies, L.L.C, Naval Support Activity South Potomac, SMECO, Safeway, Target, and Walmart/Sam’s Club. The event was held at the Greater Waldorf Jaycees Community Center.
