SOUTHERN MARYLAND – National Correctional Officer and Employees Week, which is observed during the first full week of May, highlights the commitment and professionalism of those who serve in correctional facilities across the nation.

“This week, we observe National Correctional Officer and Employees Week. I want to take a moment to recognize the extraordinary dedication and commitment of the men and women who serve at the Charles County Detention Center. Every day, our correctional officers and staff work tirelessly to ensure the safety and security of everyone. They face unique challenges and responsibilities to maintain order and uphold the law within the facility. But their work goes beyond just maintaining security. It’s about providing support and guidance to incarcerated individuals as they navigate toward rehabilitation and reintegration into society,” stated Charles County Sheriff Troy Berry.

“Through a variety of programs and mentoring initiatives, our staff strives to make a positive impact on the lives of those in our care, helping them to build a better future for themselves and their communities. It’s not an easy job, but it’s one that they take on with compassion, professionalism, and a genuine desire to make a difference. To all the dedicated staff of the Charles County Detention Center, I extend my deepest gratitude for your commitment and service. Thank you for all that you do.”

During this week of recognition, it is essential to express gratitude for the sacrifices and contributions of correctional officers and employees.

This morning, the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office kicked off National Correctional Officers and Employees Week with a flag-raising ceremony.

“According to Major Reece, raising the flag and the new colors above the facility is a tradition as it symbolizes: A new level of appreciation and deeper respect for all first responders and healthcare professionals. It also symbolizes a new beginning, a restart to our lives and our careers, and is a reminder to continue to support & help each other, and offer words of encouragement whenever possible,” stated the Sheriff’s Office.

As we commemorate National Correctional Officer and Employee Week in Southern Maryland, let us take a moment to acknowledge the dedication and professionalism of these heroes. Their service ensures the safety and well-being of our communities, embodying the values of integrity, compassion, and resilience.
