Enjoy the Celtic ensemble, OCEAN Trio, at the Calvert Marine Museum on Friday, April 2.ย  The final concert of this seasonโ€™s First Free Friday Concert Series will start at 5:30 p.m. in the museum auditorium. Reservations are not required; seating is on a first come first served basis.ย

The Washington Post calls OCEAN Trio “nothing short of spellbinding.โ€ Led by Jennifer Cutting, performing with Lisa Moscatiello and Rosie Shipley, the program combines Cutting’s innovative arrangements of Irish and British traditional music with themes from classical music and award-winning original compositions.ย  ย

A composer, performer, and ethnomusicologist, Jennifer Cutting is a multiple award winner in all areas of her musical career including her dramatic sweep of the 2004 WAMMIE awards, winning “Musician of the Year,” “Songwriter of the Year,” and “Best New Artist,” as well as “Album of the Year” and “Best Contemporary Folk Recording” for her album OCEAN.ย  ย

Lisa Moscatiello (vocals, guitar, and whistle) grew up in Arlington, Va.ย  She became involved in the Irish music scene in Washington, DC during the 1980s, and became lead singer for the traditional Irish trio Ceoltรณirรญ. Lisa studied voice at Yale, and toured with the a capella group Redhot and Blue.ย  She was lead singer of Jennifer Cutting’s British folk-rock band The New St. George, and has since been a member of Whirligig.ย  Also a solo artist, she has three solo and duo CDs to date. Billboard magazine calls her voice “one of the most gorgeous vocal instruments in all of folk.”ย

Rosie Shipley (fiddle) grew up in Baltimore, surrounded by traditional Irish music and dance, and in rural Nova Scotia, Canada, home of the famous Cape Breton-style of Scottish traditional fiddle playing. Rosie had her first violin lesson at age three and, when she was eight, began to learn traditional tunes from fiddler Brendan Mulvilhill. As a teenager, Rosie spent a portion of her summers in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, at the Gaelic College of Celtic Arts and Crafts where she studied fiddle with Sandy MacIntyre and piano with Ryan MacNeill. Rosie has toured with The Willow Band (with Gerry O’Beirne and EJ Jones) and as a guest with Cherish the Ladies. Today, she tours with singer-songwriter Gerry O’Beirne and as a trio with Gerry and singer-flute/whistle player Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh. She has two albums on the Shipwhistle label.ย

The First Friday Concert Series has been funded by the Maryland Arts Council and the Boeing Company, with additional support from the Solomons Holiday Inn Select. The museum is open free to public from 5 p.m. โ€“ 8 p.m. with docents available in every gallery.
