LEONARDTOWN, Md. — The St. Mary’s County Public Schools Board of Education dedicated its February meetings to celebrating Black History Month, highlighting the achievements of African Americans both nationally and within the local community.

During its Feb. 26 session, the board recognized the 2025 national theme, African Americans in Labor, showcasing the significant contributions of Black leaders in education, science, and public service.

Charlottis Woodley, director of Parent and Family Engagement, underscored the importance of the month-long observance, noting its origins dating back to 1926 and its continued impact in shaping historical awareness. She pointed to figures such as Benjamin Banneker, a mathematician and astronomer known for his contributions to early American science, and George Washington Carver, whose agricultural innovations transformed industry and education.

Local honorees included Dr. James A. Forrest Sr., a pioneer in education and telecommunications, and Mary Washington, Maryland’s longest-serving school board member. Dr. Jerome Adams, former U.S. Surgeon General, was also recognized for his leadership in public health. Additionally, the board paid tribute to community advocates like Dr. Janice Walthour, a retired principal, and Guthrie Smith, a former Maryland State Board of Education president.

Superintendent Scott encouraged students to draw inspiration from history, stating, “Black history is a testament to resilience, achievement, and the pursuit of excellence. We must honor these legacies by continuing to strive for a brighter future.”

Across the district, schools hosted student-led discussions, creative projects, and performances celebrating Black culture. The Dr. James A. Forrest Career and Technology Center emphasized pathways for career and technical education, aligning with the national theme’s focus on labor and economic contributions.

The board reaffirmed its commitment to integrating Black history into year-round education, ensuring that students learn from the past to shape the future.
