LEONARDTOWN, Md. — A St. Mary’s County man is being held without bond after authorities say he assaulted a correctional officer while being escorted inside the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center.

Marshall Howard Carr, 62, of California, Maryland, is charged with second-degree assault on a Department of Corrections employee, according to court and charging documents.

The incident was reported on May 11, 2026, at the detention center in Leonardtown. According to the statement of probable cause, Deputy Aaron Wood responded to the facility after a report of an assault involving Carr and a correctional officer.

Investigators wrote that Carr was being transported from one portion of the detention center to another when he allegedly became resistant. Multiple officers intervened to assist with the escort, according to charging documents.

The correctional officer reported that during the encounter, Carr struck him with his knee and hip, forcing him into a wall. Deputy Wood wrote that he reviewed security footage from the incident and that the video corroborated the officer’s account.

According to the charging document, the footage showed Carr using his right knee to strike the officer in the left leg and then forcing his hip into the officer, pushing him into the wall.

Carr was charged by court documents on May 11, 2026. Court records show bail was initially set on May 12, 2026, and Carr was ordered held without bond. A bail review hearing was held May 13, 2026, before Judge James Tanavage in St. Mary’s District Court, where Carr remained held without bond.

Under Maryland law, second-degree assault generally carries a maximum penalty of up to 10 years in prison, a fine of up to $2,500, or both. Maryland law also states that when an incarcerated individual is convicted of assaulting a correctional facility employee, the sentence must be served consecutively and may not be suspended.

A hearing is set for July 6, 2026, in St. Mary’s District Court.
