LEONARDTOWN, Md. — The St. Mary’s County Board of Education has awarded a contract for the replacement of existing lighting with energy-efficient LED lighting at Piney Point Elementary School, part of ongoing efforts to modernize facilities across the county school system.
At a recent meeting of the Board of Education on Dec. 10, trustees approved the contract that will provide LED lighting upgrades throughout the Piney Point Elementary building. The project is intended to increase energy efficiency and improve lighting quality for students, staff and visitors, according to the BoardDocs agenda item.
The upgrade is being completed through the EmPOWER Maryland SMECO Rebate Retrofit Lighting Program, which provides incentives of up to 75% for qualifying customers who replace older lighting systems with energy-efficient LED lighting and updated controls. SMCPS has utilized the program across multiple schools as funding allows, supporting long-term energy savings and reduced maintenance costs.
The Board’s vote follows the school system’s broader initiative to update aging infrastructure and reduce long-term operational costs through investments in cost-effective, energy-saving technologies. LED lighting systems are increasingly used in school facilities to provide improved illumination while lowering utility costs and maintenance needs over time.
Piney Point Elementary is one of several schools in the St. Mary’s County Public Schools system identified for improvements under the district’s long-term facilities plan. Upgrading school infrastructure has been a priority of the Board in recent years as it balances educational needs with fiscal responsibility.
The Board of Education, which governs St. Mary’s County Public Schools, is composed of five elected members and a non-voting student representative. The Board is responsible for adopting policies, approving the annual budget and overseeing the governance of the school system.
