PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. –ย CalvertHealth Foundation Supports Local Students Pursuing Higher Education in Medicine and Allied Health Fields.

The CalvertHealth Foundation is offering tuition assistance to area students pursuing higher education in medicine or allied health. Since its inception, the scholarship fund has awarded more than 400 scholarships totaling more than $515,000 in student assistance.

โ€œReceiving this scholarship helped me pursue the career that Iโ€™ve always dreamed about,โ€ said Glenn Jones, who graduated from medical school in May and is now doing his residency in pediatrics at University of Maryland Medical Center.
Jones, a 2009 Patuxent High School graduate, received the E. Anne Spitzer, MD Memorial Scholarship from 2014-2016. It was created in 1988 with funding by friends, family and the Calvert Medical Society in honor of the late family physician.
โ€œThe expenses of an undergraduate degree and medical school get to be overwhelming pretty fast,โ€ said Jones, โ€œand being able to have that extra help allowed me to breathe a bit easier.โ€

Early interest in medicine

His interest in medicine began at an early age when his 3-year-old brother was diagnosed with a life-threatening illness. โ€œThanks to our family doctor and the physicians at CalvertHealth Medical Center and Childrenโ€™s Medical Center in Washington, DC, my brother received the care he needed to survive and thrive.โ€
When Jones saw how medicine brought hope to the dismal circumstances faced by his family, he said, โ€œI immediately wanted to be part of the care-providing process.โ€
Calvert County high school graduates who have been accepted into an accredited medical school may apply for the E. Anne Spitzer, MD Memorial Scholarship.
