A late night house fire that occurred near the St. Mary’s County – Charles County border was intentionally set, state officials reported. According to the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office, the blaze occurred at an unoccupied single-story, wood-frame home on Oaks Road in Charlotte Hall. No injuries were reported and the estimated damage to the structure is $100,000. The Wednesday evening, Sept. 17 blaze was discovered and reported by a passing motorist.

The fire was the result of “suspects igniting combustibles in a bedroom of the vacant home,” stated Dfm. John Nelson.

Thirty-five firefighters from Hughesville, Mechanicsville, Waldorf, Benedict, La Plata and Bel Alton were dispatched to the scene and brought the flames under control in 15 minutes.

Nelson reported that the owner of the house is unknown at this time.

No arrests have been made. Anyone who might have information that could aid authorities in their investigation is asked to call the State Fire Marshal’s Southern Region Office at 443-550-6833.
