HUGHESVILLE, Md. – The Southern Maryland Association of REALTORS® (SMAR) is sponsoring two contests that involve children between kindergarten and twelfth grade. The goal is to raise awareness about Fair Housing among school children and citizens of Southern Maryland.

Fair Housing Art Contest – SMAR is seeking entries from students between kindergarten and twelfth grade. Winning illustrations will be chosen for a fair housing-themed publication published by Maryland REALTORS®.  The theme for the 2018 is “Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Fair Housing Act.”  Entries are judged locally where one winner will be chosen from each of these grade categories: K-5, 6-8, and 9-12. The three local winners are submitted to Maryland REALTORS®’ state competition.  The winners of the state competition are invited to a reception at the state house in Annapolis to meet the Governor. Entry deadline: February 15, 2018.

Essay Contest – Third grade students are invited to write an essay on the theme “What My Home Means to Me.”  Essays are judged locally and six winners are selected. Entry deadline: March 30, 2018.

Criteria may be downloaded from our website at somdrealtors.com/2018FairHousingContests. Winners of both contests will be notified in writing and invited along with their parents and teachers to a reception in May to receive certificates of recognition and a $50 prize. The reception is hosted by members of our Community Relations Committee at the REALTOR® Center in Hughesville.
