Firefighters were called to a commerical building fire at the McKay’s store on Signature Lane in Lexington Park Friday night and quickly doused the blaze.

The fire originated inย a trash compactorย in the rear of theย main store at about 9:50 p.m., minutes before the store was scheduled to close. Smoke from the fire and noise from the smoke alarms forced employees to close the store early.

The Hollywood, Solomons Island, Valley Lee, Patuxent River, and Bay District Volunteer Fire Departments responded to the scene, along with the Lexington Park Rescue Squad. Firefighters quickly contained the fire, but remained onsite for more than hour, ventilating the store with seven high-powered fans.

The scene was cleared just before 11:30 p.m.

Fire investigators removed the trash compactor from the scene. No injuries were reported.
